What does a typical Spanish household look like? According to figures from INE, Spain’s National Statistics Institute, it consisted of 2.5 people in 2019 – a significant decrease from 1970 – when the average household numbered 3.82 individuals. However, the sharp decline in the size of households has leveled off in recent years, and the number of households in Spain is now down to around 18.6 million. The financial crisis in 2008 with consequent difficult economic conditions, persistently high unemployment figures and the ongoing pandemic may lead to an increase in household size again.
How the corona pandemic will affect Spanish households in the long run is a bit early to say, but some suggest that the trend of fewer households and more people living together may strengthen: Adult children who are either out of work or have an uncertain work situation often move home to their parents, other adults team up with friends or in housing associations to share costs in difficult times.
