Many of us are familiar with the airline Iberia, for many years the national airline of Spain. However, it was not the first company in its industry to be established in the country. The first airline was founded in late 1925 and started servicing a route between Seville and Madrid from late 1926. Its name was Unión Aérea Española and was started with the help of the German aircraft manufacturing company Junkers.
Iberia was established in 1927 as Compañía Aérea de Transportes by Horacio Echevarrieta, a Spanish businessman, with the help of Lufthansa and started operations in December of that same year. In 2010 Iberia merged with British Airways to create one of the world’s largest airlines. It is the oldest Spanish airline still in operation.
Today you will find a host of airlines based in Spain including some well known names such as Iberia, Vueling, Air Europa and Air Nostrum. And there are of course many more airlines from other countries servicing Spanish destinations with more than 80 million foreign visitors annually pre-pandemic.
