Did you know that with its 3,567 kilometers Spain has the second largest high-speed rail network in the world? And the largest in Europe. It boasts four rail service brands including AVE, AVLO , Ouigo and ILSA.
AVE (Alta Velocidad España) and AVLO (Alta Velocidad Low Cost) are both operated by state-owned Renfe. Ouigo is part of French state operator SNCF’s operations while ILSA (short for Intermodalidad de Levante) is a joint venture between Trenitalia and airline Air Nostrum, a Spanish regional airline based in Valencia.
And you can find tickets priced as low as Euro 7.
The high-speed rail services have trains capable of delivering passengers to their destinations at maximum speeds of up to 360 km/h (the equivalent to just below 224 mph). How about a trip to get from Madrid to Barcelona that only takes two and half hours? With these kind of offers, high-speed railways can prove to very serious competitors to both airlines and going by car between large cities in Spain.
If you were wondering: China has the largest high-speed rail network in the world.
