Did you know this about early Spanish and US military cooperation?

Did you know Spain started its military cooperation with the USA under the Franco regime and as early as in 1953? Due to support from Germany and Italy during the civil war and Franco’s support for these same powers during the 2nd world war, Spain had become internationally isolated. The country’s economy had been suffering since the civil war in the late 1930s which put the brakes on its societal development. But as the fears of fascism eased somewhat and the threat of communist expansion grew, the United States entered into an agreement providing Spain with much needed financial support in return for access to naval (1) and air bases (3) around the country. This agreement was named The Pact of Madrid.
