When we visited the small town of Rojales some years ago, we spotted a poster in a shop window. The text read: “We are opposite”. We laughed a little when we saw the sign, not out of spite, but because it reminded us that we all stumble when we express ourselves in a language we do not fully master. It is good to see that we are not the only ones struggling to learn languages. Today’s call from FindYourSpain: Allow yourself and everyone around you to make mistakes. Laugh with, not of.
The store we were going to shop in had put up the sign. It had moved to new locales, across the street. It was one of these old-fashioned hardware stores that, strangely, always has what you need, either in the store itself or in the storage room in the back. The owners know their products, and if you manage to put a Spanish name to the product you are after or gesture so that the benevolent souls behind the counter understand what you mean, you rarely leave empty-handed.
Why are we writing this? Because we want to encourage everyone learning Spanish and not least, everyone around them, to allow for mistakes and clumsy expressions. We would argue that mistakes are the best learning tool available – especially when it comes to languages.
Language is not just a school subject
Children learn languages quickly, with or without instruction. Release a seven-year-old in a group where he or she does not understand a word, and after a few months, a fully functional language is in place. For us adults, on the other hand, it can be difficult to embark on a project as large as a completely new language. And one of the biggest obstacles is that we are afraid of making fools of ourselves. So: Do not worry about making mistakes. And don’t forget to laugh at your mistakes. It is amazing how well you remember what has given you a good laugh.
Language learning is not what it once was
Also, learning a language today as an adult, is actually something completely different than doing it because someone else has put it on your schedule. Now you learn languages to enrich your own life. No grade should be given to how fast you learn or how “good” you become. In other words: It’s time to let go, allow yourself to make mistakes.
And, the tools available for learning a foreign language today are completely different than they were just five or ten years ago. There are smart solutions available for anyone who wants to learn – and many of them are actually free.
For example, what do you say to a “teacher” who keeps track of what you can do with vocabulary at all times? And even better, it keep track of words you are not entirely sure about and make sure you practice on your weak points at appropriate intervals? Everything from the sofa, bus seat or beach chair – whichever you prefer. Find Your Spain will get back to some of these learning tools going forward – so stay tuned.
Come on, languages are more fun and easier to learn than ever. You do not have to be “best in class” to enjoy it. And you: Do not forget to laugh with! Be opposite!
