Emasesa, the municipal water company of the city of Sevilla, is starting a pilot project turning excess oranges from the city’s almost 50,000 orange trees into energy. The oranges dropped onto the streets amount to between 5.5 and 6.0 million kilos. Through the process of fermentation, the oranges release methane which in turn can be used to increase the production of electricity in the city. The plant used for this conversion is already using organic matter to produce electricity.
The added electricity in this pilot project will be used to power a water purification plant in the city.
You can read more about it in this article in The Guardian from Feb 23 of this year: ‘A role model’: how Seville is turning leftover oranges into electricity.
